Our Breeding Program:
Standardbred Poultry
Ellen J Farm prioritizes quality over quantity, using single-mated birds to ensure accurate lineage tracking. Parent stock is maintained long-term rather than replaced annually, and strain longevity and productivity are systematically recorded and evaluated as part of the breeding program.
Care and Health
Birds are housed in insulated, well-ventilated shelters with access to runs, dry bedding, fresh water, feed, grit, and oyster shell. Only birds with strong genetics are used as brood stock, and annual testing is conducted for Pullorum-Typhoid and Avian Influenza
Selection Standards
Brood stock is selected primarily for health, structure, and functional traits such as broodiness, egg production, and foraging ability, with color being a secondary consideration. Each season, the top 10% of chicks are retained and paired for future breeding to ensure the development and maintenance of complete, well-rounded birds
Ongoing Evaluation
Birds are continuously evaluated throughout their lives, with those exhibiting recessive defects, structural faults, weakness, or disqualifying traits being culled. In limited cases, breeding within a strain is permitted to address low population numbers or achieve genetic improvement. Defect reduction is managed through culling, test mating, and careful tracking of lineages.
Sales Approach
Currently our primary focus is farm fresh eating eggs. Hatching eggs are offered to support wider adoption of the breeds raised. Questions and inquiries are welcome.
